FAQ

COMMON QUESTIONS

How often should I train?

Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for beginners — enough to build muscle memory without burning out or overloading your body before it adapts. Many members eventually train four to five times per week as conditioning improves.

Do I need any experience to start?

Not at all. A lot of our members started with zero martial arts background. Beginner classes are designed to teach fundamental technique from scratch — stance, movement, basic strikes — in a structured, non-intimidating environment. You will not be thrown into sparring on day one.

What's the difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing?

Muay Thai is often called "the art of eight limbs" because it uses fists, elbows, knees, and kicks — plus the clinch, a close-range grappling position unique to the discipline. Traditional kickboxing typically limits striking to punches and kicks only. Muay Thai is more complete as a striking system, which is why it's the foundation of most MMA fighters' standup game.

What's the gym culture like? Will I fit in?

OCMT is a community of people pushing themselves and their teammates to improve. Training Muay Thai or JiuJitsu demands humility — everyone was a beginner at some point, and experience is earned not assumed. Whether you are a mom of two looking for a fun way to workout or a pro fighter looking to sharpen your skills, OCMT welcomes you to our community. The Golden Rule: check your ego at the door, help the person next to you, and push yourself to get better.

Is Muay Thai safe? Will I get hurt?

Like any physical training, there's inherent risk — but beginner classes are non-contact. You'll work on pads with a partner or coach, not spar. Sparring is introduced gradually and always with proper protective gear. The culture at a well-run gym prioritizes learning over ego, and coaches enforce that standard. Our goal is to keep you safe, and get you better!

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic wear — shorts and a t-shirt or rashguard work great. You'll train barefoot on the mat. Gloves and shinguards are required, but if you don't own gear the gym has loaner equipment available while you figure out what you want to invest in.

Will I have to compete or fight?

Not at all. While we love when our members progress enough to give competition a shot, we don't push it and we always ensure anyone wanting to compete is fully ready to do so. If interested in competing, our coaches will setup a training regiment designed to ensure you are prepared.

Will I lose weight training Muay Thai?

Most members see significant body composition changes within the first few months of consistent training. A typical class burns 500–800 calories depending on intensity and body weight. More importantly, the skill-based nature of training keeps people engaged long-term — which is what actually produces lasting results.

Do I need to buy my own equipment right away?

No. The gym provides loaner gloves for your first class. If you decide to continue, you'll want to invest in your own gloves, shinguards, and hand wraps. There are a lot of very affordable brands to choose from, our coaching staff can point you toward the right gear given budget and needs.
